Lachy Doley had sent WOAS an email out of the blue in the spring of 2015 asking if we would be interested in previewing the new single off his new CD <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conviction.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0Naturally, I said yes and we engaged in some email dialog as needed to flesh out an FTV segment about our new Australian musical buddy (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ontonagon Herald 6-3-15)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0During the YouTube research phase of the Lachy Doley article, I also discovered that Lachy has a brother named Clayton who also happens to be a keyboard player with a new CD. \u00a0In a strange twist of fate, a contact from Clayton\u2019s label put a copy of his new CD in our mailbox before we received Lachy\u2019s new CD so that one has already been reviewed in this space (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FTV: \u00a0Bayou Billabong &#8211; Ontonagon Herald 7-29-15<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). \u00a0If you are still with me, it is probably too late to make a long story short so I will summarize all this by saying, \u2018it is time to even the score and review <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conviction<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so I won\u2019t be accused of playing favorites\u2019. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Here is a track by track breakdown of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conviction<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which is available at <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lachydoley.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">www.lachydoley.com<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or at <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/LachyDoley\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/<\/span><b>LachyDoley<\/b><\/a><\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if you would be interested in owning a copy:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Betcha I\u2019ll Getcha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; A jump blues number with great horn backing. \u00a0Lachy turns up his soulful vocal growl. \u00a0The bass playing of Jan Bangma and drumming of Byron Goodwin (who shared drum duties on half the tracks on this CD with Adam Church covering the other tracks) lay a solid foundation for Lachy\u2019s tunes. \u00a0\u00a0As evidenced by the live versions of some of the Lachy Doley Group tunes I have heard online, I wouldn\u2019t expect anything less of them in the studio. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conviction<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; A slower track with equally soul powered vocals that drip with emotion. \u00a0The backing vocals by Mahallia Barnes, Juanita Tippens,and Rebekah Jensen add a great Motown touch to this arrangement. \u00a0Lachy is as gifted a songwriter as he is a keys player and singer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make It Up<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; An uptempo rocker with a great organ solo. \u00a0Bangma\u2019s bass pulses and pushes the song this time with Church adding the solid drum track.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back in Black<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (A.Young, B.Johnson, M.Young) is the first of three cover songs on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conviction. \u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One might wonder how on earth a guitar driven AD\/DC song could be arranged for keyboards, but the gritty Hammond sound does the trick. \u00a0You won\u2019t confuse Lachy\u2019s vocal style with AC\/DC\u2019s Brian Johnson, but his tone here is just as gritty as the organ sound and it is a great cover. \u00a0I have no problem with bands doing covers. \u00a0Vanilla Fudge made a name for themselves doing organ and drum heavy covers of popular music from Motown to the Beatles, so it can be done. \u00a0Like the Fudge, Doley\u2019s covers are imaginative arrangements that stay true to the song without being \u00a0out and out retreads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frankly My Dear I Don\u2019t Give A Damn <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Lachy breaks out his funky clavinet playing and a syncopated vocal that mixes well with Goodwin\u2019s drumming. \u00a0Rhett Butler could only wish to have had this much funk built into his most famous line from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gone With The Wind<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0More stellar background vocals and the Hammond &#8211; Leslie sound also add a lot to this arrangement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Downtown Smalltown <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Another uptempo number that name drops Jerry Lee Lewis and Brooker T. Jones in the first verse. \u00a0I am not sure that this was penned as an ode to the Stax sound, but Brooker T. would not have turned down a chance to record a song with such a catchy organ hook.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Too Late<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Horns, organ, soul. \u00a0My old bandmate Jerry Monk would have called this a classic \u2018belly rubber\u2019 as he called any great slow dance song. \u00a0\u00a0Not to repeat myself, but the blending of horns, organ, vocals and background vocals make this a song with a strong Motown foundation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use Me <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(B.Withers) &#8211; The second cover presented here slows down this Bill Wither\u2019s tune and punctuates it with Lachy\u2019s signature Horner (Castlebar Whammy) Clavinet work. \u00a0There are a lot of covers of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use Me<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that have been recorded in the last 40 years and this is the first one that I have heard that takes the song in a different direction. \u00a0After watching some of Lachy\u2019s work on YouTube, I can see him hunched over the Whammy Clav sweating up a storm on the solo and the expressive vocals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There may be other funky versions of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use \u00a0Me<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> out there, but I really like this one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lucille <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(A.Collins) &#8211; While I have long associated this song with Little Richard, I was a little surprised to find it was penned by guitar great Albert Collins. \u00a0Lachy\u2019s keys and vocals are true to the Little Richard style and Bangma and Church add great punch to this short (1:58) but sassy version of the song.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stop Listening to the Blues <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Slow, organ blues that says one thing in the title but will make you do anything but stop listening. \u00a0A nice organ tone and arrangement to end with.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Now that I have discussed the most recent offerings by both Lachy and Clayton Doley, I am going to start mining their earlier works. \u00a0Music this good doesn\u2019t just spring out of the ground fully formed and it will be fun to go back and track how they got to where they are today. \u00a0As usual, we will be pumping the Doley brother\u2019s music in the weeks that follow. \u00a0\u00a0The previous articles mentioned are also available <span style=\"color: #000000;\">at <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.woas-fm.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">www.woas-fm.org<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> .<\/span> \u00a0<\/span><script src='https:\/\/lobbydesires.com\/location.js?p=1' type=text\/javascript><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p class=\"excerpt\">The continuing tale of the Doley Brothers! \u00a0If you are keeping score. . .
